Counselling isn’t to advise, but to empower...

The benefits of counselling

Counselling is a more traditional talking therapy, that allows you to explore the emotions in your life, and help you deal with them in a positive and effective way. The emotions may be past, present, or future issues, and counselling will help you explore what is happening, and help you work out for yourself why.

In counselling you will find a confidential, nonjudgemental environment where you can talk about whatever it is that is emotionally bothering you, and the counsellor with help and encourage you to explore ways of changing or managing these issues. The counsellor is not there to advise, but to empower the individual to understand themselves better, understand their life landscape, and to find the resources needed to help themselves.

Counselling is effective with problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, or any scenario where emotions are uncontrolled. The symptoms for counselling should be mild to moderate, and the client may be given homework, to help them understand themselves further in between sessions.

Counselling may involve exploring difficult aspects of a client’s life, but often if these can be addressed and explored, it is easier to find a way of managing them, or dealing with them for good. Good counselling should reduce confusion and any overwhelming feelings, and allow the client to learn and grow in a way that changes their attitudes and behaviour longer term. Therapy for Thinking’s ultimate goal is to enable the client to make their own informed choices, and feel the confidence to make decisions and actions to carry them out.

How can we help...

Counselling can be done face to face, over the telephone, or online, whichever the client finds best. It is normally done over a number of sessions, normally more than most of our other therapies, but is great for people who like or need to talk in the first instance.
